About this event
Gacalo Tech’s SHE BUILDS AI was a comprehensive 7-night virtual workshop series hosted under the theme "AI For Development Girls Shaping the Digital Future". Running nightly from 8:00 to 9:00 PM EAT, the curriculum was specifically designed to take Somali girls and women from complete beginners to capable digital innovators. Here is a detailed breakdown of the curriculum covered across the seven sessions:Day 1 (April 14): What is AI and how it works The program launched with a foundational, beginner-friendly introduction to Artificial Intelligence. Participants explored the core concepts, essential terminology, and the underlying mechanics of how machine learning and AI algorithms process information, demystifying the technology for first-time users. Day 2 (April 15): AI in our daily life Building on the technical foundation, the second session shifted to practical applications. This workshop provided an exploration of how AI systems currently impact everyday routines, streamline business operations, and drive global technologies, helping participants recognize AI's invisible presence in the tools they already use. Day 3 (April 16): AI tools in Action Day three transitioned from theory to practice with hands-on training. Attendees were guided through leading generative AI platforms, specifically learning how to navigate and utilize ChatGPT for text generation, Canva AI for automated design, and Gemini for research and productivity. Day 4 (April 17): AI & Somalia This deeply contextualized session focused on leveraging global technology for local impact. Participants analyzed real-world challenges within Somalia and brainstormed ways AI could be deployed as a tool for development, community building, and solving hyper-local problems. Day 5 (April 18): Prompt Engineering To maximize the value of AI tools, participants learned the technical art of prompt engineering. This session taught the critical skill of crafting precise, context-rich, and effective prompts to control AI behavior and generate high-quality, accurate outputs. Day 6 (April 19): Presentation & Pitch Skills Innovation requires effective communication. This session stepped away from the keyboard to equip attendees with essential public speaking and presentation skills. Participants learned how to structure a pitch, articulate their vision, and successfully sell their tech ideas to stakeholders and audiences. Day 7 (April 20): She Innovates Prep The final workshop served as a dedicated mentorship and working session. Attendees received hands-on support to finalize their personal projects, refine their pitches, and fully prepare their concepts for real-world presentation.
